Posted on February 14, 2012 | No CommentsMore Than 4 Times Maximum for “Cold Shutdown” Washington’s Blog Tuesday, February 14, 2012 Over 400 Degrees Celsius Pretending that the Fukushima reactors achieved a state of “cold shutdown” was a political – rather than scientific - decision. Tepco itself said the state of cold shutdown could only continue so long as the temperature within the nuclear reactors stayed below 100 degrees Celsius. (Because the thermometers within the reactors have a 20 degree margin of error, Tepco says that any reading over 80 degrees violates the conditions for a cold shutdown.) As Bloomberg notes today: Tokyo Electric Power Co. said the temperature in one of the damaged reactors at its Fukushima nuclear station rose to levels above safety limits even as it injected increased amounts of cooling water. According to the Asahi Shinbun , with a translation courtesy of Ex-Skf , we finally know that the “nuclear fuel rods in the pressure vessels and in the spent fuel pools at the plant have been damaged .” Which means that any incremental work the repair crews may be doing at this point is simply window dressing in preparation for the concrete tomb/lead bath. -

Earlier Japanese news agency Kyodo reported that the storage pool could be boiling, while Tepco said readings showed high levels of radiation, making the building inaccessible. 2237: A reminder that reactor four was not in operation at the time the earthquake struck, but was being used to store spent fuel rods.
