  • More Than 4 Times Maximum for “Cold Shutdown” Washington’s Blog Tuesday, February 14, 2012 Over 400 Degrees Celsius Pretending that the Fukushima reactors achieved a state of “cold shutdown” was a  political – rather than scientific - decision. Tepco itself said the state of cold shutdown could only continue so long as the temperature within the nuclear reactors stayed below 100 degrees Celsius. (Because the thermometers within the reactors have a 20 degree margin of error, Tepco says that any reading over 80 degrees violates the conditions for a cold shutdown.) As Bloomberg  notes today: Tokyo Electric Power Co. said the temperature in one of the damaged reactors at its Fukushima nuclear station rose to levels above safety limits even as it injected increased amounts of cooling water. One of three thermometers indicated the temperature at the bottom of the No. 2 reactor pressure...

  • Tyler Durden Zero Hedge March 21, 2011 Well, in tried and true fashion, it took Japan a week to confirm what everyone else had been certain had occurred over a week earlier. According to the Asahi Shinbun , with a translation courtesy of Ex-Skf , we finally know that the “nuclear fuel rods in the pressure vessels and in the spent fuel pools at the plant have been damaged .” Which means that any incremental work the repair crews may be doing at this point is simply window dressing in preparation for the concrete tomb/lead bath.

  • Washington’s Blog March 19, 2011 Science Insider noted yesterday: The Daiichi complex in Fukushima, Japan … had a total of 1760 metric tons of fresh and used nuclear fuel on site last year, according to a presentation by its owners, the Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco). The most damaged Daiichi reactor, number 3, contains about 90 tons of fuel, and the storage pool above reactor 4, which the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC’s) Gregory Jaczko reported yesterday had lost its cooling water, contains 135 tons of spent fuel.
